Organic Laughter - Work with Seniors
Friday, November 7, 2008 at 8:24PM I have been working a little harder to drum up business around Laughter Yoga as everywhere I speak about or demonstrate it seems to lead to another avenue or interested party. In talking with a local yoga studio owner, I was directed to a woman who is a local Yoga teacher and is also using laughter in her work with seniors. I spoke with her this week and although she is trained as a traditional Yoga teacher she does not have any official Laughter Yoga training (there are many Laughter Yoga Leaders and Teachers that began as traditional Yoga teachers of some form). She has come to using laughter with seniors organically. Her yoga and mediation work pointed her in this direction. Next week, I will meet with her and get a taste of what she does by attending a session in SW Portland. I am very excited to find someone using laughter to help and heal in Portland and even more excited that I will have the opportunity to learn from her. I love that she doesn't have any official Laughter Yoga training, but came to it naturally. It only serves to reinforce our innate ability to express ourselves through laughter! Stay tuned for a report.

Yesterday I attended one of Louise Lorente's sessions with a group of seniors in the Adult Day Services program at Robison House in SW Portland. It was wonderful to actually get to experience what she is doing, especially since she came to using laughter of her own accord. The things she does with the group were very similar to what others with Laughter Yoga training seem to be doing with seniors. Everyone sits in a circle and there are lots of gentle stretching and breathing exercises and even a little singing. Since her background is in traditional yoga, there might have been more stretching than laughter related exercises, but the flow worked well and the movements and exercises seem appropriate for the group.
I also had fun just being with this lively group, many of which have Alzheimer's. As Louise says, it is a great reminder and learning opportunity to be with the members of her group each week, as Alzheimer's patients are almost always in the present moment.
After the 30 minute session, Lousie and I talked over lunch at New Season's Marketplace. We had a wonderful connection, each sharing our personal stories of healing and helping others. I plan to attend one of her Adaptive Yoga classes at the new SW Portland studio OmBase. I may even bring my mother along!
